Featured Survivor Spotlight on Jenny John Baptiste
Last year Jenny was featured in an article published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel titled “Their cancers can't be cured. But new treatments are changing the length, and quality, of their lives.” Diagnosed with Lynch syndrome in her early 20s, Jenny knew it was not a question of if she'd get cancer, but when. In June 2021, a cancerous tumor was found in her adrenal cortex and she has since undergone many treatments. She says the years added to her life with end-stage cancer have "brought me hope" and her cancer now feels like "something I can live with." She admits, "I am more present now. When I have my good days, I am grateful." Meet Jenny and hear her inspiring story!
THANK YOU to Jenny for sharing her story!
Thank you also to those of you who attended Tuesday evening’s TLC Survivorship Session (which included a mix of cancer patients in active treatment through long-term survivors along with many family/friend co-survivors)!
There are two things that make these TLC Survivorship Sessions so powerful. First, of course, are the amazing stories of strength, courage, and hope that are told by some amazing human beings (who also happen to be cancer survivors). Due to the rather abrupt start of Tuesday’s meeting (BTW: I’m wearing a brand new watch today!), I forgot to light our TLC Candle, which we typically light in honor of the thousands of years people have sat around a fire telling stories… because that’s what we do at TLC! We tell some powerful stories!
But, if you weren’t with us on Tuesday, you missed out on the other part that makes TLC so powerful - COMMUNITY! In that room throughout the evening was this communal energy - a mix of kindness, compassion, empathy, concern and love! I believe that “love is medicine"! And yes, this idea is supported by research. Love, in its various forms, can reduce stress and increase positivity. It can also trigger beneficial changes in gene expression that can enhance immunity, contribute to recovery, and even slow aging,
So why not write yourself a prescription for “love as medicine” and consider joining us at the next TLC Survivorship Session (scroll down for details)!
