In the last issue of this Local Cancer Community Update I shared some thoughts and a link to a recent podcast. I honestly thought the title would grab the attention of many of our readers. But, according to Mailchimp’s analytics that provide information on various metrics, surprisingly few readers clicked on the link!
Maybe this would have been more effective:

Were you to busy?
Consider Dr. Ashley’s assertion (which is well-supported by the evidence) that “One minute of exercise buys you five minutes of extra life.” So, head out for a brisk 10-minute walk after listening to this 50-minute podcast and you’ll eventually get all of your time back! If you want more time back… simply keep moving!
Maybe you are already convinced that “Exercise May Be the Single Most Potent Medical Intervention Ever Known,” and consider it “old news.”
Dr. Ashley points out, “We have known the power of exercise for seventy years. Why has it taken us so long to really deeply delve into the molecular basis of it? I don’t actually have a good answer for you except that, in general, we tend to study disease more than we study health.” He goes on to talk about some of the new and even surprising findings that he and other members of the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium, which studies rats and humans to better understand the molecular changes induced by exercise, have found.
As Derek Thompson, Plain English podcast host, points out, “Exercise is a conundrum. On the one hand, physical activity is clearly one of the best interventions for preventing physical disease and mental suffering. On the other hand, scientists don’t really understand how it works inside the body or what exactly running, jumping, lifting, and squatting do to our tissues and organs. That’s finally changing.”
I encourage you to give this podcast a listen and use what you hear as encouragement, motivation, and inspiration to do what we know we should do even when we don’t feel like doing it!
