Linda & MIke reported: Enjoyed Tuesday morning at CF&G before the rain. Enjoyed seeing babies in a couple of boxes even if they weren't bluebird. The BSS bluebirds have left the nest and we removed the nest. Hopefully they will return next year.
Maryellen & Tom reported: No blue birds on the south trail- more like tree swallow monitoring. We sat a long while at TTE watching a swallow sitting in their doorway, looking around (thinking?): it finally left. Two more did the same. I thought these birds looked smaller than a typical tree swallow. So, was this fledging? A parent flew in/ out of the box once. We didn’t disturb the nest. When the chicks fledge, are they gone for good, or return awhile…..referring to someone with more experience, because we don’t know. Robyn, what do you think
Robyn responded: it seems like you may have seen fresh fledglings still hanging around their nest! From what I've read, tree swallows generally do not return to the nest to sleep/roost once they fledge, but they will occasionally peek back in the box where their nest was, in the days following fledging. They will also typically spend their nights on branches nearby their nest, while they learn to fly and catch insects, before striking out on their own for good after a few days. It's pretty cool that you were in the right place at the right time to catch that sight!
Mary completed the North Trail , reporting BBs at CDW had fledged and noting BB activity at BSS (see below photo)! Tim completed the South Trail where all but one box were inhabited (5TS/1HW). On a personal note... I may have a BB nest in the nesting box I put up in our back yard (no eggs)!

Thanks to Leah (North Trail) and Colleen (South Trail) for your work! Monitors should see their individual emails/monitoring sheets for details. Check the "At A Glance" document for a summary of current activity! We seem to be attracting plenty Tree Swallows... but still some Bluebird activity as well! The attached photo is one of those TS that wouldn't leave the nest for Colleen!
