Although the Indoor Row Group is currently enjoying the off-season (the official Indoor Row Group season runs from November 1st through April 30th), one dedicated rower has been rowing year-round! Earlier this summer Jennifer King completed the Concept2 Rowlympic Challenge and rowed her first half-marathon. On Monday, August 23rd, she became the first Indoor Row Group member to complete a Marathon Row (42,195m or 26.2 miles)!
Why did you decide to row a marathon?
After completing the half marathon, I was ready to keep going and I wondered how far I could go. So, I decided to “row for it”! I decided I should focus on what it would be like to do it and succeed instead of what if I failed to complete it....and turns out I could do it!!! You never know what you are capable of until you try!
What was the experience like?
Well, I have NEVER considered myself much of an athlete so to have something to "train" for was kind of a new experience for me! And while I am pretty sure I didn't train the way an experienced athlete would train it worked for me! I just increased my meters slowly and listened to what my body said, instead of my head, if they weren't in agreement! I learned when to push my limits and when I need to call it quits. I learned how important little things are; like what to wear, how much to drink, when I should or shouldn't eat. Stuff like that! It was fun! I really enjoyed it and I had some great people encouraging me along the way.
How do you feel now that you've completed your marathon?
Amazed! Excited! Energized! Ready to do the half century! I can't believe I completed it and that I was able to do so well! I think I did pretty good! Though I know where I would make changes to try and beat my time... so I'm excited for what's next!
